A Little History of our Company
DeSoto Abstract was founded by John L. Jones in 1889. The abstract business kept pace with the fast growing area and eventually opened branch offices in the areas that would, in 1921, be split into four other counties. They were Hardee, Highlands, Charlotte and Glades.
During the Great Depression, the branch offices were closed and all business took place in the Arcadia office, in order to keep the company open. Eventually, Mr. Jones' son and then grandson took over running the business. DeSoto Abstract would remain in the Jones family until 1991, when the business was sold to Sue Newberry. Ms. Newberry would run the business until 1999.
In October of 1999, Dorothy A. Conerly, President of Wauchula Abstract & Title Company, in Hardee County purchased DeSoto Abstract. At the time, Mrs. Conerly brought with her over 25 years of experience in the title insurance business and has continued to run the business ever since.
We are proud to be one of the oldest businesses in DeSoto County, having our doors open for over 125 years. Striving to provide the best possible service for all of your title needs, we hope to be open for, at least, 125 more.
